Problem: A ship traveled from port A and went 100 miles straight east. Then it changed its course and went 300 miles straight south. From there, it went 200 miles straight east and finally went 700 miles straight north to reach port B. How far port B is from port A (straight distance)?

Correct Answer: 500 miles

Explanation:

AB² = AC² + BC² (applying Pythagoras)

= (100+200)² + (700-300)² = 250000

Here, AB² = 500²

So, AB = 500 miles
