Problem: Karim drove for an hour and half at 50 miles per hour. When he realized that it would be dark very soon, he raised his speed to 55 miles per hour and continued at the same speed to the end of the journey. The total distance Karim drove was 174 miles. How long did he drive at 55 miles per hour?

Correct Answer: 1hour 48 minutes

Explanation:

Karim drove in 1.5 hours = 1.5 x 50 miles per hour = 75 miles

Total distance = 174 miles

Distance traveled at the rate of 55 miles per hour = 174 — 75 = 99 miles

$\text{Time=}\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{speed}}$

= $\frac{99}{55}$ = $1\frac{4}{5}$ = 1 hour 48 minutes
