Problem: The import duty on a car is 50% of its cost. An additional supplementary tax of 30% is charged on the cost plus import duty. If the total of import duty and supplementary tax is Tk. 2,85,000 what is the cost of the car?

Correct Answer: Tk. 3,00,000.

Explanation:

Let, cost of the car = Tk. x

Import duty = 50% of x = 0.50x

Cost + import duty = 1.5x Tk.

The supplementary tax = 30% of 1.5x = 0.30 x 1.5x = Tk. 0.45x

Import duty + Supplementary tax = Tk. 0.5x + Tk. 0.45x = Tk. 0.95x

So, according to question

0.95x= 2,85,000

x = 3,00,000

Cost of the car = Tk. 3,00,000.
