Problem: A boat sailing against the current takes 8 hours to travel 32km. While sailing with the current, It takes only 4 hours to travel the same distance. What is the speed of boat? What is the speed of the current?

Correct Answer: 6 and 2

Explanation:

Speed of boat = x; Speed of current = y

While traveling against current, it can sail (x — y)km/hr & while sailing with. the current, it cantravel (x + y) km/hr.

8(x —y) = 32……….. (i)

4(x +y) = 32………… (ii)

From equation no(i) 8(x —y) = 32

=> x—y=4 ……….. (iii)

From equation no(ii) 4(x +y) = 32

=> x+y=8……….. (iv)

Adding and subtracting (iii) & (iv)

x = 6

y = 2
